With so many free courses on the internet, why would you spend the money for it?

    I don’t think it’s worth it.

Rosetta Stone is phenomenal, if only I had the money. I definitely think it is a great investment if you have that kind of money. but you’re opinion might be a little different than mine. try to find a location that sells Rosetta Stone so you can try it out to see if YOU personally like it. I would suggest looking in a mall or something? That’s where I see Rosetta Stone stands.

I think RS is really good. There’s a lot of resources online, maybe not as good, but if you’re committed to a language, you can learn it for free. I used torrents to learn languages. But in answer to your question…. if you’re going to purchase a program to learn french, I’d recommend Rosetta Stone.

Bon soir mon ami. Bon chance aussi. :)

I’m very impressed with Rosetta Stone. I used it to learn French and can speak it pretty well now. It does take time (there isn’t a software application that can zap a language in your head in a couple of seconds) but if you got the dedication and passion, go for it :)

I would say definitely torrent the program if you don’t have the extra cash to spend.

I tried rosetta stone for Spanish. It does not have any translation, grammar or conjugation instructions so it will be very hard to go beyond the basics with it. It is good for the basics as it is pure memorization. There is no way to be fluent with it. Their program is based on the same thing where you see these 4 pictures over and over again. I was disappointed especially for the price I paid.

My college uses tell me more. My goal was to become fluent so it was perfect for me and I bought their individual version. It has a lot of different activities: picture/word association, videos, dialogues,…, includes also grammar and conjugation. It has also more content than any other language software. Their speech recognition is great so you can have a dialogue with the computer. You can contact them to get a free demo and also ask for a Rosetta Stone demo to compare, visit independent reviews websites(About.com, …).

The best way to learn a language would be through immersion, visiting these countries. Learning a language will require some time. In addition to software, you can have books which are useful as well. Audio CDs like Pimsleur for instance might help you out but you cannot get any feedback on your pronunciation so I did not like it so much

    Hey asmabb,

Rosetta stone is a decent program if you are into IMMERSION style learning. I’ve used RS, and obviously for them to be charging so much it’s going to be a good program and you WILL learn. However, it’s my experience that there are better programs out there. If you are dead set on RS french don’t let me deter you – it is a GOOD program – but I’m just trying to give you my input and constructive feedback.

So if you are dead set on Rosetta Stone do this:

    - Get it from Amazon, it’s $100 cheaper than if you get it from rosettastone.com

NOW, I personally suggest two language programs which I believe are the best (I’ve used both of them, and I’ve become fluent in that language – keep in mind though, I’ve been at it for a year, although I believe if you are willing to put in the work and really use these programs you can become fluent much faster).

The first one I suggest is Rocket French, if you click on the link in my source (the /french one) it’ll give you a little more information and a brief review. They offer a free ebook + a free 6 day course. RF is great because, well straight up, it’s the cheapest and best AND you can download it instantly. Otherwise if you don’t want to download it, you pay more and get it shipped to you (there is no difference in the actual product download or shipped, only dif. is it costs more, and you cant use it right away).

The second product I recommend is Fluenz, it’s like Rosetta Stone but better. The sheer product quality is just astounding. It also comes with a 1 / 2 Level, I’d suggest get both, this will take you from beginning-advanced.

There are reviews for all these products on the page I provided in the source.

Hope this helps & GL with your french journey.
